Background Information
On a 12 – 14 January 2019 visit to the Arab Republic of Egypt, UNHCR High Commissioner Filippo Grandi met President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, along with League of Arab States Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, government ministers, refugees and asylum-seekers. He discussed Egypt’s refugee situation, plus regional and global issues. Egypt is an important state in the Middle East and currently chairs the African Union. It hosts over 242,000 registered refugees and asylum-seekers and sets an example by accommodating refugees in urban settings, providing the same standards of health and education as those given to citizens. UNHCR has been in Egypt since 1954.
